What types of learning will address the instructional problem? The instructional problem is the engagement and learning retention of the content material. This problem is most visible in the second and third module of the course. I believe that the solutions to the problem will primarily be addressed/resolved with the redesign of the instruction methods.
In my course, there will be three "modules" or components. The first module will be pre-training assignments, research, and preparatory tasks for the student to complete. These assignments exist in the preexisting curriculum and work fairly well so I won't be adjusting them much. The second module will consist of the actual in-person or "live" workshop. This module will be delivered over the course of a full day of activities. The third module will be the post-training assignments and assessments which will be completed by the learner no later than 1 month after the "live" workshop. The third module may also contain several checkpoints at later times after the workshop is complete.
Pre-Training Assignments
Upon the completion of this module, the learner will be able to evaluate a competition property and its positive attributes and negative attributes.
Upon the completion of this module, the learner will be able to evaluate their own property and identify positive attributes and detracting.
Upon the completion of this module, the learner will be able to identify effective marketing strategies on social media for their own property and competition property.
In-Person Workshop
Upon the completion of this module, the learner will know how to give a phone tour, Facetime/virtual tour, and in-person tour.
Upon the completion of this module, the learner will know how to answer all questions about the property with a prospective resident and turn concerns into positives.
Upon the completion of this module, the learner will know how to design effective marketing with social media.
Post-Training Assignments
Upon the completion of this module, the learner will demonstrate a great phone tour, Facetime/virtual tour, and in-person tour.
Upon the completion of this module, the learner will design and implement marketing ads and strategies with social media.
Upon the completion of this module, the learner will work with prospective residents to answer their leasing questions and sign new residents to the property.
“What kinds of thinking are necessary to build disciplinary understanding?” For this workshop, the concept of "See one, do one, teach one" is particularly relevant. The learners must first observe the tasks they are to complete by watching their competition and other staff members (returners or professional staff). They must then be able to pick out the successful techniques and the unsuccessful techniques of what they witnessed. The second phase involves "doing one" - though in this case, the learners will be "doing" the tasks in the live workshop with the instructor and their classmates. The third stage involves the staff members doing/teaching the information in practice. They then teach the skills to each other as they go about the leasing season. The learners are constantly refining their skills as they learn what strategies work best for them.
Understanding the difference between instructional goals, learning objectives, and learning outcomes was particularly difficult for me to wrap my head around so I've dropped a link to a video below that helped clarify from the Center for the Advancement of Learning - C.A.L.'s channel. Enjoy!
