ADDIE MODEL: Implementation Station

In the previous posts about ADDIE, we reviewed how to analyze the needs of the course and its learners, how to to design the delivery of the course its learning objectives, and how to develop the course instructional blocks of media and integrate them together. In this next post, we will introduce the implementation of the course, or the actual delivery. This includes any training of the course facilitators and student assessment.

In the implementation phase, it is important for the ID to complete the following steps:

  1. Train the trainers/instructors

  2. Preparation of the learners

  3. Preparation of the learning environment

When training the trainers how to utilize and guide the students, the ID should ensure that the trainers fully understand the goals of the course. In addition, the trainers need to be able to execute the course’s activities and understand why they are being used. The trainers should also understand how to use all media content and technology tools. Finally, the trainers will need to understand how to administer the course assessments and utilize the data collected from them.

When preparing the learners of the course, the ID will need to ensure that there are sufficient resources for the learners to utilize the technology (including learners from all abilities). The ID should know the level of proficiency required to use the technological tools involved in the course. Insufficient knowledge of the technology could detract from the leaner meeting the learning objectives. Finally, the ID needs to ensure that the goals and course schedule are clearly articulated for the learners.

Preparing the course environment typically will mean that the ID is ensuring that all resources and tools of the course are formatted, integrated, and ready to go for the learners. This might include setting up projectors/screens for a classroom, verifying audio resources are working correctly, ensuring computers can work with headphones/speakers and sounds cards if necessary, downloading any software needed to complete the course, or providing workbooks/handouts for the learners.

Some additional items that the ID may need to be aware of during the implementation phase include:

  • Ensuring the course has a timetable and that the facilitator and learners are clear on the timetable;

  • For in-person courses, making sure physical space or tools are reserved;

  • Managing travel or expenses for trainers or learners if needed.

In the next post, we will review the final stage of ADDIE - Evaluation. For a more in-depth look at Implementation, check out the video below.
